ThinkFirst Iowa's Message

Traumatic brain injury is the number one cause of death and disability in children and young adults. It is estimated that traumatic brain injuries claim more than 50,000 American lives annually. An additional 80,000 to 90,000 individuals suffer long-term disability as a result of brain injury.

Statistics related to spinal cord injuries are just as grim. Approximately 11,000 new spinal cord injuries occur each year in the U.S. A projected 4,860 victims of spinal cord injuries die before reaching the hospital each year. An estimated 183,000 - 230,000 Americans are currently living with spinal cord injuries.

ThinkFirst Iowa encourages youth to be active and to ThinkFirst - by getting trained, using the correct safety gear and using wisdom to navigate risks. ThinkFirst Iowa shares its injury prevention message through free school and community presentations with the help of VIPs (Voices for Injury Prevention), injury survivors who share their stories to educate others.

Our one-hour program offers the ability to teach youth about the important functions of the brain and spinal cord. Students learn there is no cure for a brain or spinal cord injury. They are made aware of the physical, mental and emotional consequences of such an injury. They are presented with examples of how such injuries occur, and most importantly how these injuries can be prevented.

Give us an hour of your time and we'll help your students make better choices - choices that Help insure their future.
