Visit Iowa Health Des Moines

The Fire Safety House program was established at Blank Children's Hospital in 1994 as a way to educate Iowa children about escaping residential fires.

History

The House traveled statewide, transported by a core group of volunteers. In the Spring of 2003, after nine years of operation, it was decided that the original Fire Safety House was no longer usable for statewide travel. During the period 1994 - 2003 the Fire Safety House educated more than 35,000 children and 4,400 adults about fire prevention and home escape plans.

Fire Safety House 1994 - 2003

In January of 2005, Blank Children's Hospital's original Fire Safety House was sold to the Floyd County Firemen's Association, and members of the Charles City Fire Department traveled to Des Moines to take home their "new" Fire Safety House.

Through a grant form the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other grants and donations, Blank Children's Hospital was able to purchase a new Fire Safety House from Surrey Fire Safety House, a division of the Walters Group in Napoleon, Ohio. The new Fire Safety House was delivered to Blank Children's Hospital on September 16, 2005. Shortly after the arrival of the Fire Safety House, Blank Children's Hospital purchased a new tow vehicle from Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny, Iowa.
